Cloud 9 & Surfing in Siargao: From Beginners to Barrels.
Cloud 9 is one of the most famous waves in Southeast Asia — a hollow right-hander breaking over a shallow reef. But Siargao has breaks for every level, from gentle beach breaks to powerful reef points.
Cloud 9: The Wave
Cloud 9 is the most iconic wave in Siargao — a hollow right-hander that peels over a sharp reef shelf. The wave is intermediate to advanced; beginners should start at Jacking Horse or Quicksilver nearby (both sand-bottom). Cloud 9's appeal is its consistency and the boardwalk experience: the famous viewing tower sits directly above the break, so spectators can watch the action without paddling out.
Wave Characteristics
Best season: August–November. Swells peak September–October (4–6 foot faces common). Wave shape: Fast, hollow right-hander. Sections are steep; you need good paddle power and pop-up speed. Reef: Sharp, shallow. Reef booties are essential; gloves help too. Crowd: Heavy on weekends and during swells. A typical morning session might have 15–30 surfers in the water. Go early (dawn, 6–7 am) to avoid the rush and find better waves.
Best Conditions
4–6 foot swells, offshore wind (east to northeast), morning tide. Mid-tide is usually best; extremely low tide exposes the reef and increases injury risk. Check tide times daily at your accommodation or via World Tides app.
Entrance & Boardwalk
Entrance to the beach area: ₱50 (~USD 0.90). The Cloud 9 boardwalk is a covered beachfront structure with a viewing tower, food stalls, small bars, and a watching platform directly above the break. You don't have to pay to access the boardwalk; it's free. Great for non-surfers or spectators. The atmosphere is genuinely fun — Brazilian surfers, Australian backpackers, Filipino locals, and European pros all intermixing.
Beginner-Friendly Alternatives Near Cloud 9
Jacking Horse
A 5-minute motorbike ride north. Beach break (sandy bottom), forgiving, suitable for beginners and intermediate. Smaller, quieter, and lower stakes than Cloud 9. Entrance: free. Bring your own board or rent one at Cloud 9 beach shops.
Quicksilver
Another sand-bottom break, similar to Jacking Horse. Good for learners wanting to build fundamentals without the reef-cut risk.
Stimpy's
A right-hand reef break, similar intensity to Cloud 9 but less crowded. Suitable for intermediate surfers wanting fewer people in the water.
Rock Island & Pacifico Lefts
Advanced breaks on the island's quieter northern coast. Rock Island is a heavy right, Pacifico breaks (plural) are fun lefts. Require 30+ minute drive from GL and intermediate-advanced skills. Fewer crowds, more local flavor.
Surf Lessons & Equipment Rental
Lessons
Cost: ₱500–800 (~USD 9–14) per hour. Duration: Most schools offer 1–2 hour sessions. Instructors: Mix of Filipino locals trained at schools like Siargao School of Surfing, and international expats. Quality varies; ask for recent reviews or recommendations from other travelers. Group vs. private: Group lessons (4–6 people) are cheaper; private (1–1) is better for fast-tracking technique. Beginner progression: Plan 3–5 hours of lessons to be comfortable paddling and popping up; real surfing takes months. Beginner-friendly breaks (Jacking Horse, Quicksilver) are where you actually learn.
Board Rental
Cost: ₱300–500 (~USD 5–9) per day for beginner/soft boards. Advanced performance boards cost slightly more. Multiple-day discounts are normal (5% off for 3+ days). Where: Beach shops line Cloud 9 boardwalk and Tourism Road in GL. Quality is mixed; inspect the board for dings (delamination), assess the fin system, and confirm the board is actually suitable for your skill level (some rental shops give oversized boards to beginners, which makes learning harder). Return policy: Usually same-day. Damage beyond minor dings may incur repair fees (₱200–1,000 ~USD 3.50–18).
Seasonal Breakdown: When to Paddle
Peak Swell (August–November)
Wave quality: Biggest, most consistent. Wave size: 4–8 foot faces common. Best months: September–October. Crowd: Heavy. International surfers flock here; lineups are full dawn–noon. Go early or accept crowds. Pricing: Accommodation, lessons, and board rentals are 15–25% more expensive.
Shoulder (March–May)
Wave quality: Small, clean, beginner-friendly. Wave size: 1–3 foot faces, consistent and textured. Crowd: Light. Perfect for: Learning, practicing technique, building confidence. Pricing: Budget lowest here.
Transitional (June–August, December–February)
Variable. June–August leans wet; waves are less reliable. December–February starts the swell building. Expect 2–4 foot waves, light crowds. Not the best, not the worst — workable if you're here for other reasons (island-hopping, food, digital nomad work).
Important Practical & Safety Info
Reef Cuts Are Common
Cloud 9 sits over a sharp reef shelf. A wipeout at the shore can mean significant cuts — blood in tropical water heals slowly and infection risk is real. Wear reef booties (₱300–600 ~USD 5–11, rentable from shops). Rinse cuts with fresh water immediately; avoid saltwater exposure for 24 hours. Minor cuts typically heal in 5–7 days with proper care.
Rip Currents
Exist, particularly during high tide and large swells. If you get caught in a rip, don't panic. Swim parallel to shore (left or right) until you exit the current, then turn back toward shore. Never fight a rip directly.
Helmet Recommended (But Unlikely)
Impact injuries from boards/rocks are less common in surfing than in contact sports, but they do happen. Most surfers here don't wear helmets; it's culturally rare. Up to you based on risk tolerance.
Stonefish & Sea Urchins
Both hide in shallow reef areas. Wear reef booties and shuffle feet when walking on reef. If you tread on a stonefish, the wound is painful and potentially serious — seek immediate medical attention (clinic in GL is 15 minutes away). Urchin spines are irritating but not dangerous; soak in hot water if struck.
Dehydration & Sun
Easy to ignore while in the water; you'll dehydrate quickly. Bring water, drink frequently between sessions. SPF 50+ sunscreen reapplied every 2 hours. Rash guards and wetsuits (even thin ones in warm water) protect against sun and minor friction injuries.
Siargao Cup & Events
The Siargao Cup (international pro-am surf competition) typically runs in late September. If you're here during competition, the break is closed to recreational surfers during event hours; it's worth watching from the boardwalk. Non-event sessions are open to everyone.
