Getting to Siargao: Every Route, Explained.

The Direct Flight Route (Fastest)

Cebu Pacific and Philippine Airlines both operate daily direct flights to Sayak Airport (IAO) from Manila, Cebu, and Clark. This is the fastest, most straightforward way to reach Siargao.

Manila to Sayak

Flight time: 1.5 hours. Airlines: Cebu Pacific (typically cheaper), Philippine Airlines (more frequent). Fares: ₱1,200–₱3,500 (~USD 21–62) one-way depending on how far ahead you book. Booking 2–3 weeks before travel usually yields rates around ₱1,500–1,800; last-minute bookings (1 week before) jump to ₱2,500–3,500. Round-trip bundles can save you ₱300–500 if you know your return date. Flights depart morning (6–8 am) and evening (5–7 pm); morning is slightly cheaper because fewer leisure travelers book it.

Cebu to Sayak

Flight time: 1 hour. Fares: ₱1,500–₱2,500 (~USD 27–44) one-way. Slightly pricier than Manila but faster. Useful if you're combining Cebu island-hopping with a Siargao detour.

Clark to Sayak

Flight time: 1.5 hours. Fares: ₱1,800–₱2,800 (~USD 32–50). Clark (Diosdado Macapagal International Airport) serves the northern Manila metro. Useful if you're coming from Subic or northern Luzon but not typically cheaper than flying from Manila proper.

Booking Strategy

Book directly on the airline websites (cebuexpress.com, philippineairlines.com) or through Agoda, Expedia, or Skyscanner if you want to compare across airlines quickly. Avoid booking through travel agencies unless you're buying a package — they don't typically offer better rates for domestic Philippine flights. Set a price alert 4 weeks out; book as soon as you see prices below ₱2,000 (~USD 36) for Manila–Sayak.

Sayak Airport: What to Expect

Sayak Airport is small — a single-story terminal with a baggage hall, a few shops, and an outdoor waiting area. No significant delays (processing happens in 10–15 minutes). No tourist information booth, but your accommodation will have arranged pickup or you can hire a van directly outside.

Airport to General Luna

Distance: 45 km (~27 miles). Drive time: 45–60 minutes depending on traffic (minimal) and road condition (good). Options:

• Direct van (recommended): Vans line up outside the arrivals area. ₱300–400 (~USD 5–7) per person solo, or ₱800–1,000 (~USD 14–18) if you hire the entire vehicle for yourself. Split a van with other travelers if possible — you'll often find people heading the same direction. Vans typically wait to fill before departing (10–20 minutes).
• Motorbike rental at airport: Some rental shops operate a desk at the airport. Grabbing a 125cc scooter immediately (₱350–500 per day) and driving yourself works if you're comfortable on bikes and traveling solo or with someone who can ride double. The road is decent; visibility and local traffic are manageable in daylight.
• Ride-share (Grab/Uber): Coverage at Sayak is inconsistent. You might wait 15–30 minutes for a driver. Grab, if available, will cost ₱450–700 (~USD 8–12) to General Luna. Only use if no van is available.

Airport to Cloud 9

Cloud 9 is 45 minutes south of General Luna by motorbike. If you're heading directly to Cloud 9, ask your van driver to take you straight there instead (add 15–20 minutes to the journey, same price). Alternatively, van to General Luna first, grab food and coffee, then motorbike to Cloud 9once you're rested.

The Ferry Route (Budget Alternative)

Ferry from Surigao City to Dapa (Siargao's port town on the northwest coast) is significantly cheaper than flying but takes longer. Only worthwhile if you're not time-constrained and want to minimize airfare.

Surigao City to Dapa Ferry

Ferry operator: Primarily Dalirig Shipping (dalirig.com.ph) and Cokaliong Shipping. Duration: 2–3 hours depending on sea state and time of day. Morning crossings tend to be calmer. Fares: ₱350–500 (~USD 6–9) per person, economy class. Departure times: morning (usually 9 am) and afternoon (usually 2–3 pm). Book the evening before if traveling peak season; otherwise, you can usually buy a ticket day-of at the port.

Dapa to General Luna: From Dapa port, shared vans depart frequently (roughly every 20–30 minutes when full). Cost: ₱80–120 (~USD 1.50–2) per person. Drive time: 45 minutes on a decent road. Vans gather near the port exit; no need to book ahead.

Getting to Surigao City: This is the catch. Getting to Surigao City from Manila is the time-killer. Options:

• Flight Manila–Surigao: 1 hour, ₱1,500–2,500 (~USD 27–44) one-way. Defeats the purpose of saving money via ferry.
• Overnight bus Manila–Surigao: 12 hours, ₱800–1,200 (~USD 14–21) one-way. Cheap but brutal if you're not accustomed to long bus rides. Buses depart 7–9 pm from various terminals (Five Stars, Ceres, etc.) and arrive early morning. You'll be exhausted, grab a hotel for a few hours, then catch the ferry.
• Drive or van hire: Not practical for a one-off trip.

Ferry Math

Manila–Surigao–Dapa–Siargao (ferry route): Overnight bus (₱1,000) + ferry (₱400) = ₱1,400 (~USD 25) versus flight Manila–Sayak–General Luna (₱1,500–2,000 ~USD 27–36). Ferry saves ₱100–600 but costs 16+ hours of travel versus 3 hours. Only worthwhile if you have flexible time and budget is truly tight.

Getting Around Siargao Island

Motorbike Rental (Best for Independence)

125cc automatic scooters (Honda Beat, Yamaha Nmax, Yamaha Click) are ubiquitous. Daily rate: ₱350–500 (~USD 6–9). Weekly rates: ₱2,000–2,500 (~USD 36–44). Refundable deposit usually ₱1,000–2,000 (~USD 18–36) via cash or temporary card hold. Gas costs roughly ₱150–200 (~USD 2.70–3.60) per full tank and covers most of the island.

Rental shops line Tourism Road in General Luna; quality is fairly consistent. Take a brief walkthrough video before you leave the shop and note any existing scratches or damage — you'll need it as protection if the shop claims you caused damage that was already there. Always wear a helmet (mandatory, ₱50 fine if caught without). Keep speeds reasonable (under 50 kph on main roads); night riding is not recommended for tourists.

Habal-Habal (Shared Motorcycle Taxi)

Local motorcyclists take 2–3 additional passengers as paying cargo. Cost: ₱50–150 (~USD 0.90–2.70) depending on distance. Chaotic, cheap, and efficient for short hops (General Luna to Cloud 9). Not comfortable for long journeys or if you have luggage. Flagged down roadside; no booking needed.

Shared Van/Jeepney

Vans and jeepneys run set routes (primarily General Luna–Cloud 9–Pacifico–Dapa). Fares: ₱50–150 (~USD 0.90–2.70) depending on distance. Slower than motorbike but reliable and safe. Wait at roadside stops or ask your accommodation to call a van.

Private Driver/Car Hire

Hotels can arrange private van rental with driver for ₱2,000–3,500 (~USD 36–63) per day. Useful if you're traveling with a group or prefer not to navigate yourself. Not necessary unless you're renting a private villa or doing a multi-day road trip.

International Arrival Logistics

Visa (Philippines)

Most nationalities (UK, US, Canada, Australia, EU, Japan, South Korea) receive 30 days visa-free on arrival in the Philippines. No pre-approval needed; just arrive and enter. Keep your passport valid for 6+ months. No return flight ticket is technically required at immigration, but carrying one (even a screenshot) is proof you're not overstaying intentions.

Money & Currency Exchange

Philippine Peso (₱). ATMs are widespread in General Luna. BDO, BPI, Metrobank, and PNB machines work with foreign debit/credit cards (though some charge ₱200–300 ~USD 3.50–5 per withdrawal). Your bank may also charge a foreign exchange fee. Bring USD or EUR cash as backup; money changers in General Luna will exchange at fair rates (usually better than ATM rates) for ₱1,000+ withdrawals. SIM Card & Data

Globe and Smart are the two major networks. Buy a prepaid SIM at the airport or any convenience store (₱40–100 ~USD 0.70–1.80 for the card; load separately). A month of data (10 GB+) costs ₱300–500 (~USD 5–9). 4G coverage is reliable in General Luna and Cloud 9; more patchy in remote areas. Alternatively, many accommodations offer free Wi-Fi.
